We all know that when it comes to interviewing that it can be very intimidating and nerve racking. As humans we tend to slip up from time to time and do/say things, that might not be the best decisions. So, let’s say that you have your first job interview right out of college, and you’re looking to find advice on what to do and what not to do for an interview. It’s always best to come prepared and blow the minds out of your interviewer that you’re the best candidate. We know you are!
Why don’t we take a look at a few things that you might not have thought of that you probably shouldn’t do in an interview.
1. Being Clueless About the Company
Umm… do you even know what job you’re applying for?
Never go into a job interview without doing a good amount of research on the company before you have your first encounter. It would be a little embarrassing if they asked you a question on why you like the company or what intrigued you to apply here, and you didn’t have an answer. Browser around the company’s about us page or articles on the company. It’s best to see if the company has an atmosphere that you would be willing to work in.
2. Forgetting Copies of Your Resume
As I had mentioned before that everyone is human and we make mistakes. What if, you’re at the interview and the interviewer had forgotten to grab your resume and he had nothing to reference off of or see your accomplishments. Do you say, “Well that’s too bad, I guess we have to reschedule?” No! You pull out a nice clean printed copy of your resume and hand it to the interviewer; and this shows that you always come prepared. Talk about being impressed!
3. Unclear Answers and Rambling
Everyone gets nervous during interviews, and everyone knows that. But it doesn’t give the interviewer a whole lot of confidence if you’re stumbling through your words under pressure. Before you go in, take a minute to clear your mind and get your nerves under control. Once the interview starts, listen carefully to the questions, take your time to answer, and try to get your point across without taking a long time to get to the result. Also, try to speak clearly and don’t mumble, you don’t want them to keep asking you to repeat yourself.
Be Loud, Proud, and Confident!
4. Speaking Negatively About Previous Employers
Oh No, No, No, No!
This is extremely unprofessional, and it’s the quickest way to talk yourself out of a job. It could also make the interviewer think that you would speak badly about them too. Of course, you can tell them about your bad experiences, but don’t focus too much on the negativity and speak on what you learned from it and what you would do differently. They just love it when you can give them examples of problems and how you fixed it or can fix it in the future.
5. Forgetting To Ask Questions
So, we’re at the end of the interview and the interviewer asks, “Do you have any questions for me?”
Wait, you’re saying that I have to have questions to ask them?!? Yes, it’s a great way to show your excitement about the position and that you were paying attention throughout the interview. It is also a good time to ask any questions that you were unfamiliar with on the application or the company. Trust me they want you to ask questions, so they can tell you everything about the company and position.
Okay, so now you know what not to do in a job interview. Let’s start applying to future dream jobs and show them that you are the best candidate for the position!
